There's a specific kind of mental effort involved in following a novel's plot across four hundred pages, or sitting with a piece of music long enough to notice how a theme returns changed in the final movement, that doesn't have a direct substitute. It requires holding information across time — remembering a character's motivation from three chapters back, tracking a melodic idea across minutes rather than seconds — and that sustained tracking is doing more than entertaining you. It's exercising the same basic cognitive machinery that empathy depends on.
Theory of mind — the capacity to model what another person is thinking, feeling, or intending, distinct from your own state — is not a fixed trait. It's a skill built through practice, and narrative fiction happens to be an unusually efficient practice environment for it. When you read a well-constructed story, you are continuously inferring interiority: why did this character say that, what do they actually want, what don't they know that the reader does. Researchers studying this effect have found that engagement with narrative fiction correlates with stronger theory-of-mind performance, and the plausible mechanism isn't mysterious — the mental operation of inferring a fictional character's internal state overlaps substantially with the operation of inferring a real person's internal state. You are, in a very literal sense, rehearsing empathy every time you get absorbed in a story.
Music does something related through a different channel. Group musical activity — singing together, playing in an ensemble, even synchronized clapping — reliably triggers oxytocin release and produces measurable increases in prosocial behavior toward the people you were making music with. Rhythmic entrainment, the process by which people unconsciously synchronize their movements and even their heart rates to a shared beat, appears to be one of the oldest bonding mechanisms in human social behavior, predating language by a considerable margin on most evolutionary accounts. It's not incidental that music functions as a near-universal feature of human ritual, celebration, and mourning across cultures with no contact with one another. The mechanism is doing real social work, not just providing pleasant sound.
What connects narrative absorption and musical entrainment is the same resource: sustained, undivided attention held over a meaningful stretch of time. Call it slow time — the cognitive state of tracking one continuous thread, whether a plot or a melody, without interruption or context-switching. It's the opposite of the attentional mode that algorithmic feeds are engineered to produce, which reward rapid switching, immediate stimulus response, and short attention windows optimized for engagement metrics rather than depth. That's not a claim that feeds are uniquely villainous — any environment that consistently interrupts sustained attention would produce the same effect. It's simply a description of what the two modes are actually built to do, and they are built to do different things.
The practical stakes here aren't abstract. If theory-of-mind and emotional attunement are trainable capacities that depend on sustained attention, and if the ambient information environment most people spend the most hours in is optimized against sustained attention, then the erosion isn't just about shrinking attention spans as an isolated complaint — it's about the raw material empathy is built from getting less practice time than it used to. The corrective isn't complicated, even if it's not easy: deliberately protecting stretches of slow time — a novel instead of a feed, a full album instead of a shuffled playlist, an evening of shared music instead of parallel scrolling — isn't nostalgia for an older way of consuming culture. It's maintenance on a specific piece of cognitive infrastructure that doesn't get exercised any other way.
